Perennials For Detention Basin Edges And Seasonal Wet Areas

Detention basins are practical pieces of stormwater infrastructure, yet their margins can become attractive, productive garden spaces. The planting brief is demanding: soil may be dry for weeks, saturated after a storm, and briefly covered by shallow water when rainfall exceeds the basin’s design capacity. Plants need resilience, strong crowns and a growth habit that remains tidy as water levels change.

For Australian gardeners, the best choices depend on local climate, soil and basin design. A suburban swale in Melbourne experiences a different winter pattern from one in Brisbane, while Perth’s sandy soils drain rapidly after intense rain. Treat Shade And Soil As Design Constraints
